8 Decisions Every Man Should Make is a study of eight personalities that exist in every man King, Lover, Fighter, Jester, Artist, Mourner, Wizard, and Mystic. These classic archetypes are found in myths and stories throughout history and represent themes common in every man's life. They come together to form his core, and they determine what his life will look like. For each archetype there are imposters who can take over and distort the potential we, as men, are capable of achieving. In these pages you will study each and discern whether you are in or out of balance. This book is a challenge to the reader to embrace all eight facets of manhood and determine what kind of man he will become.

"With a well thought out world view and great advice, Pastor Jeff has poured his heart and experience into this book. The premise of the book is that there are 8 parts of a man to cultivate or ignore, and two ways each can be skewed. These parts are given labels like The King, The Mourner, The Mystic, and The Jester. These very different parts can be encouraged to thrive in a balanced way to complete a man. Jeff writes with the same authority and casual brotherly tone in which he preaches, peppering the book with personal stories and insights that come from a life lived well with Jesus. The end of each chapter gives the reader a chance to self-evaluate where he may fall on each part and what the Holy Spirit would have him change. The book could easily be used as a 9 or 10 week small group study or simply as a book for individual growth. Personally challenging, but not difficult to read, I encourage you to give this book a try."

- This was a good read, and different when examined among a plethora of other men's/self-help books out there, because it speaks to both familiar and unfamiliar territory. The chapters on the Jester, Artist, and Wizard were particularly engaging, as was the final chapter, which focused on application. I found myself laughing when reading about the "imposters" - the Copycat, the Know-it-all, the Prude, the Reprobate, and others - interesting concepts that really make you examine yourself. Another plus This book, while written by a person of faith (this becomes more and more obvious as you work through the material), is accessable and applicable to anyone regardless of belief; the religious tones are more commentary and would not be a barrier to an irreligious person.
Aside from that, the book is well put together and it is obvious that many hours went into this one. From the cover to the grammar to the citations, flow, and vocabulary, all is well done and without barriers that would impede the reader from diving in and engaging the material.
Highly recommended. Get ready to think about the true state of your manliness! - The book's short chapters and easily digestible sections make this book perfect for devotional reading or for a small group study. While it may seem like a light read, initially, the book tricks you into ruminating on your life experiences and how each archetype currently manifests itself and how it has done so in the past.
- The information and insight offered throughout this book can be beneficial to any reader. The author personalizes the information making it meaningful and relevant. A must read!

- I have read the book once, and I can tell you that it won't be the last time. Every chapter challenged me with something, and there were a couple chapters that rocked my world! There were times when the book described me in uncanny detail--and not usually in a good way. I will be back to these pages time and again when I need encouragement, motivation, or direction.
The book is obviously formed from years of thoughtful experience. There's nothing contrived or artificial here. Granted, some of the archetypes may seem an odd way of describing manhood, but by the end of each chapter you'll see the beauty there. Jeff writes in a way that is easy to understand, but packed with truth.
As he writes in the intro, the best way to read this book is slowly, thoughtfully, over a long period of time. If you're like me, Jeff's writing will keep you moving right along and you'll finish before you know it. Well, now I intend to go back and spend my time in each chapter, because there is so much truth in there for me. This book will benefit any man, woman, or child who is willing to look inside of themselves, question who they are, and make change where needed. - Jeff Miller has a written a book that expresses the 8 different archetypes, or characteristics, a healthy man (and I believe, more generally, a healthy person) will exhibit. He also couples them with the 16 characteristics that present themselves if there is an overemphasis or under emphasis of those main characteristics. He takes the reader through the King, the Lover, the Fighter, the Jester, the Artist, the Mourner, the Wizard and the Mystic--telling what these characteristics look like when lived out in men. Near the end of each chapter, headed by its own characteristic, Jeff explains what can manifest if not balanced properly. For example the King is the healthy, main characteristic, while the Abdicator appears when a man does not fully step into his role as King with his words or actions or the Mogul steps in when the King is over developed and the man has become inapproachable and domineering. He then ends each chapter with space for the reader to process through where they find themselves on the scale of three, what makes him that way and what he could look for in the future. Systematically Jeff leads the readers on a journey through each of the characteristics sharing how they might be seen in the reader's own life tempering it with the lessons that Jeff has lived and heard over the course of his life.
I have to say that I know Jeff in real life (as apposed to this book reader/book writer "life" online) and there are stories he shares inside this book that I hadn't yet heard. Know this, Jeff writes the same way that he speaks--imagery abounds as well as a careful thoughtfulness to understanding and connection.
I also appreciate, maybe more than anything else in the book, the ending. Jeff wraps up the explanations with the encouragement and tools for living out the main 8 characteristics. Being able to see what you should "be" as well as the tools to actively live it out---that's good. I also appreciate that he makes sure to remind his readers that this is a ever present process. There is no" once a King always a King"--it takes a day by day decision not to check out in each area.
I was given the opportunity to read this title before it was published in exchange for my review.
