When the Chinese communists came to power in 1949, they promised to 'turn society upside down'. Efforts to build a communist society created hopes and dreams, coupled with fear and disillusionment. The Chinese people made great efforts towards modernization and social change in this period of transition, but they also experienced traumatic setbacks. Covering the period 1949 to 1976 and then tracing the legacy of the Mao era through the 1980s, Felix Wemheuer focuses on questions of class, gender, ethnicity, and the urban-rural divide in this new social history of Maoist China. He analyzes the experiences of a range of social groups under Communist rule - workers, peasants, local cadres, intellectuals, 'ethnic minorities', the old elites, men and women. To understand this tumultuous period, he argues, we must recognize the many complex challenges facing the People's Republic. But we must not lose sight of the human suffering and political terror that, for many now ageing quietly across China, remain the period's abiding memory.

• Loved it!!
• I don't have much in common with Stassi. I don't care about musicals or serial killers or astrology. I'm meh about ranch dressing and fully-charged cell phones. I'm an introverted book nerd who would rather get punched in the face than blast my personal life onto the screens of millions of people.
  
  And yet, holy smokes, I loved this book. I watch Vanderpump religiously. Like, religiously. I'm not proud of that (but I guess that can be my basic b**ch confession for the day?). I just love everyone on the show--especially the Toms ;)--and this book has a very similar vibe.
  
  Stassi is honest and unapologetically herself. She confesses some pretty embarrassing facts like how she awkwardly lost her virginity, how she experimented with a lot of, ahem, unflattering fashion stages, or how she is DEEPLY fascinated with serial killers. (Btw, I have definitely walked past a serial killer more than 36 times. The guy who sat behind me in class was absent one day and the next day we saw he walked into a university up north and murdered five people before killing himself. Creepy AF...)
  
  What I love most about the book, though, is how uplifting it is. Stassi expresses a surprising amount of support for other women. I love her thoughts on relationships, sex, even hookups--how she says women are active participants in romantic relationships, not just there to passively be chased until they "give it up." It's actually pretty empowering. And her chapter on female friendships also surprised me by being really insightful. Honestly, I just wasn't expecting her to be as balanced and gracious in her relationships as she is in this book. I'm impressed.
  
  In short, I loved Next Level Basic. It's a quick read and super entertaining. Five stars all the way.
• Great book! Really gets you thinking about how you need to embrace yourself and be true to yourself. Don’t be ashamed of what you love, find someone who can love you for you!
• I am still thrown off by the fact that Stassi Schroeder wrote a book. And when I say she wrote a book, SHE WROTE A BOOK! Not a ghostwriter. Stassi, in all her glory. AND she narrated the audio. I had pre-ordered the hardback, but when I saw she was the narrator, I downloaded the audio. I don't think I would have fully appreciated this book without listening to Stassi read it to me.
  
  I want to say first that you most likely won't fully appreciate this book without knowing who Stassi is. So my advice, go binge watch Vanderpump Rules on Bravo. You need to be in the know with just who Stassi is to fully take in this book.
  
  If you are expecting some life-changing, literary piece of work with this book, then you still don't know who Stassi is. That isn't a slam on Stassi, that's just the truth. I really don't know what I was expecting with this book, but I can tell you, I didn't expect some of it.
  
  Believe it or not, Stassi gives us a deep message in this book. Even with her ridiculousness, silly stories, and obsession with ranch dressing, she has an important message.
  
  I loved this book so much because she didn't spout a bunch of cliche' and overused quotes or ideas. She was real, open, and just herself in telling her message. It's not just about all of the basic things she loves. It's about embracing things YOU love. And she puts everything in such a realistic, unfluffed, uncliche'd way, I couldn't stop listening.
  
  If you want to laugh and enjoy someone being absolutely real with you, then I encourage you to pick up this book. I am not ashamed or embarrassed that I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
• I hate hate hate reading!! But this book has been so hard for me to put down it’s unbelievable! I effin love this book and the author even more for creating this amazing book!! #queenstassi
• Completely vapid. There's absolutely nothing interesting about this book or the character. Even if you're a fan of the show, this book isn't worth your time or money.
• This book was such an easy, quick read. But it was so amazing. It really reminds you how to embrace yourself and to just own who you are and not give AF about what other people think. If you love Stassi and are one of her Khaleesi’s then you will love this book!
• LOVE THIS! I’m one of those people who wishes they liked to read and I often try to make myself. But this book is great and fun to read. It’s so relatable and I have found it difficult to want to put down!

• Unlike most, I wasn't required to read this in school as a kid. I only read it now based on some recommendations. I wasn't sure what to expect, but found myself pleasantly surprised. It's a story with a lot of heart and well-developed characters. The story took a while to really hook me, but by the end I felt like I had a real connection to some of the characters. I don't tend to read many fiction books of this type (more of a sci-fi or political thriller kind of guy), hence the 4 stars, but this is a story that I think most people should read at some point.
• So happy to have purchased this. I've read the book countless times and watched the movie a little to much lol. No matter how many times I re read it, I always cry. Just in case I'm not going to go into details, I don't want to be a spoiler now. The back of the book has beautiful illustrations, pictures, and even letters. I got the hardcover so I'm unsure if the quotes are written in the same place, but famous quotes such as "stay gold pony boy" and "things are rough all over" are written in white on the back cover and last page (as well as the front cover page and first page).
• I grew up in the mid 50’s and 60’s in the Southwest. I was always aware that there were gangs around and that they fought each other and got into trouble, but they never impacted my life. I enjoyed this novel very much because it rang true about life in general during this period and because it was so well written. I was halfway through the book before I learned that it had been written by a young girl. I grew up with three brothers, one older, 2 younger and the novel’s young men felt “real” to me.
• I had some serious concerns about teaching this novel to my students. Mainly, I was worried my students would not be able to identify with the characters in the novel. This could not be further from the truth! I have been able to incorporate some great informational texts regarding Greasers and the evolution of gangs, social class inequalities, the 1960s...there is so much that can be done in terms of instruction with this novel! It is an absolute classic - a compelling story with strong use of language and engaging to teens and adults alike.
  
  My students are 8th graders at an urban middle school, predominately black and Hispanic and they are obsessed! Even my most reluctant readers are enjoying this novel. They're all excited about seeing the movie too!
• I first read this book when I was either 12 or 14 years old and I have reread this book probably seven or eight times over the last 40 years. I decided to get the e-book so that I would not have to buy the book anymore. I think I’ve always identified with Johnny but I can’t explain why. Ponyboy was another great character that I identified with because he had a choice between being a lower-class/low to middle class blue-collar type of individual or that he could use his mind to improve his future and probably leave the background he grew up in and become something more. There are youth gangs in the book and some violence, if one looks back into the past one will understand that you gangs existed. The major difference between the youth gangs of the 50s to about the 70s is that young males mostly use their fists and not guns to settle quarrels. Loved the book and I will probably read it once or twice every year for the rest of my life because I too had a choice and have done fairly well.
• The Outsiders changed my life forever. After reading this book, I never again looked at some things the same way. It is, to this day, still the greatest book I have ever read. I normally don't read nonfiction or realistic fiction, only fantasy or sci fy, but this book caught my eye. I enjoy how it was written by a teenager, because there is no better person to illustrate the lives of teens in a story. I don't like to write, but Hinton's book has inspired me to write more. The characters are so well developed that I felt like I could really live with them in the story. The plot and setting were so realistic and made me feel that the situations included in this novel were real.
  
  As Ponyboy and the gang face hardship and danger, they got to know each other like brothers. The close knit gang gets even closer throughout the story.
  
  I would recommend this book to teenagers everywhere, and when I read The Outsiders, I was thirteen years old. I have read it over and over again throughout the years, and each time I have read it, I got a different view of the characters and began to see through their eyes.
